This Installation Code combines the Volume ID with the absolute path of the licence file. Assume a situation where an application is installed several times on the same machine, but in different directories: The Volume ID is identical on all installations and therefore the application may be used by too many users (3 installations with 20 licences allow 60 users to work with your software, but you only sold 20 licences). With this Installation Code type the problem of several installations is eliminated.
Notice that the UNC Name of the directory is used, not the mapped drive-name like f:\myapp.
Pros/Cons
+ Always available and always works
+ Works in single user and network environment
+ Allows only one installation on one machine
- After reinstallation of Windows, the volume ID changes
- Volume ID’s are always the same when a image tool is used to set up a drive
Recommendation
| • | Should be used for enterprise users which have problems using the installation code with the MAC address and which want to make sure that the application is only installed once |
For a server licence only use an installation code combined with the UNC pathname.
